Whilst this adaption has an excellent cast (Bob Hoskins as Micawber was particularly good) and is really enjoyable and moving, I longed for it to be longer – I think Dickens’ novels need more time to unfold. In this respect, I thought the recent BBC adaption of “Bleak House” got it just right. It is nearly 20 years since I read the book but the thing that struck me was forcefully was how people in their lives could not avoid the spectre of death – consequently life appeared more real and substantial not like the entertainment culture we live in! You have gave me the push.
Seriousley. I watched the BBC adaption of Small Island by Andrea Levy too and adored it! It was really that good. I want to read the novel too, so this week I am going to look it up at the library. Hopefully they have a copy. Thanx.
“Other” as a political and cultural construct applied to Obama is important in a number of ways. First, it shifts his prime identification away from race, a social construct important for social priviledge and status. Second, Obama’s often confusing brand of “other,” – Muslim, socialist, elite, naive, preppy, atheist, foreign plant, devious, over his head, too black, not black enough – streams off in so many directions, it’s hard to fathom what the different labels have in common.
