I teach a small group of adults French and I’ve just started using the Smart French Beginner Audio CD set with my students who love it. They all agree that listening to the conversations is an excellent way to increase comprehension and augment vocabulary. We all value listening to native speakers carrying on conversations about everyday topics.

I find that including both a slow version and a fast version of each dialogue
makes the Smart French series an excellent tool for teaching and for learning French.

From my perspective, there are always some original ideas left, however the writer needs to be original presenting these ideas to the media, find an original way to write them out, present the characters differently, for example witches are touched less than the vampire or werewolf, therefore I focus on the witch's character as my protagonist, and being the Vampire has been so humanified, I make him my villian…with werewolf as the lover to the witch. However with the right amount of creativity you can go further, in exploring the depth of the characters, in trying to touch particular areas which hadn't been touched before…..for example my vampire doesn't drink blood but feeds in another way, while my werewolf may handle things differently….to make it unique.

Now I am not trying to give ideas, however figured I'd touch some aspects that were mentioned, I agree it does get tiresome to go to the bookstore and feel like I am reading the same book all over again.

Actually, it was more than one article. The Journal published about two dozen articles in its “I Don't Speak French” series. Check it out here.

Also, we can thank the Charest government for cutting into incentives for learning French. I’m thinking specifically of the foreign/out of province tuition-fee waiver for people majoring in French. And longer work permits for people moving en région. And of course Francicization courses are woefully underfunded. And the OQLF has been burying reports when they demonstrate the result of all this.
