I bought Rosetta Stone and was quite pleased with it. I used it for about 6 months before a virus took out my hard drive. After I reformated and reloaded the hard drive, Rosetta Stone customer service informed me that they will not allow me to reactivate the reloaded program unless I can produce my store receipt; something that no longer exists after 6 months. I now have a worthless $250 product that is unusable. If you buy this product, save your receipts and good luck to you if you have a problem. Rosetta Stone is more interested in protecting their product than satisfying their customers.
This is way overpriced for what you get and the software development is years behind. The versions don’t change much, so you might save some money by purchasing an older version.
My real problem is that my laptop’s DVD drive won’t read the CD needed to run the application after the install. This is worthless now to me. My laptop is a year old.
This is the second time this has happened, the first time I had similar problems with the disc/install. Rosetta tries so hard to copy protect their discs, that it makes them unreadable by some drive manufacturers.
Great piracy protection, but now your paying customers can’t use their licensed product.
Looks like the Rosetta Stone company has changed the business model. It has become a lot less generous. I have an older version, thank heaven. It allows me to make one duplicate set of the CDs. I can use the program at work and at home. Yes, it’s a little clunky. It ain’t Nintendo. But unless you want to spend about a month studying at Elemadrid in Spain, this program will sharpen your skills on the cheap. I’ve studied Spanish since high school, and I also did one glorious summer studying at Elemadrid. Overall, Rosetta Stone is intelligently conceived and challenging. Any program is only worth the time and effort you put into it (including Elemadrid). I give Rosetta only 4 stars, because, as others have pointed out, it’s not transparently easy. Also it is not good at record-keeping. If I lay off a couple of days, I have a hard time remembering where I was. I’ve never had to interact with customer service. No real reason to do so. One of the 1-star critics said learning “elefante” in the first lesson was a waste of time. I beg to differ. There are plenty of products that seek to give you only a couple of hundred phrases to get you through your holiday in Caracas. But Rosetta Stone is supposed to be more than that. It gives you The Spanish for strawberries, pipe wrenches, kangaroos — the lot. I think many people are probably victimized by the many TV ads. Rosetta Stone is hardly a mass market item. It works best if you’ve already had some background. Otherwise, you’re likely to be disappointed.
