
This review assumes that you have already purchased and completed Pimsleur French I. French II is simply a continuation of the same structure as French I. Vocabulary and grammatical structures are introduced in the same fashion, but with a higher volume of words and constructions per unit.

3. I think it depends on what the assigned reading is…I always learn more from something I'm engaged in, and if I'm reading for pleasure I've obviously chosen to read that, so usually I'd say I learn more from that.
4. I don't remember exactly but I was always in the high 90s for English, and 80s for math/science.
a. I'm sure it did because it probably expanded my vocabulary.
b. I think it probably helped a lot in high school, but in elementary, I was reading at a more advanced level than a lot of the assigned reading, so I don't think it taught me that much.

a. When it comes to knowing the rules and grammatical structures I'd say I'm an above average writer, but when it comes to the art of writing I think I have a lot to learn. Any talent I do have for writing probably comes from the fact that I love it and do it all the time.

8. As a reader-yes. As a writer-I think I'm sometimes a better writer than my grades indicate because I have a lot of trouble with procrastination and late work so I often lose points for that even though the writing itself is good.

I'm lucky to be a good test taker and have never had any problems personally with standardized tests, but do I think that standardized tests are useful in determining writing ability-absolutely not! all they determine is the students ability to figure out what the graders are looking for and write something that follows that formula.

French really helped me understand English grammar. I used to leave my french classes and try to reconstruct equivalent grammatical structures, like this one:
可以 Ke3 Yi3 in general means 'Can' VS 会 Hui4 express 1) uncertain posibilities/probabilities.
1) Invalid usage for ke3 yi3
今天可以下雨 Jin1 Tian1 Ke3 Yi3 Xia4 Yu3 is wrong. It don't makes much sense since you can't control whether if the rain is going to fall. For that, you turn to Hui4 for posibilities (meaning it can rain but you can't control).
1) Uncertain posibilities/probabilities with 可能 ke3 neng2
今天可能会下雨。Today might rain.
Jin1 Tian1 Ke3 Neng2 Hui4 Xia4 Yu3
2) A fact which holds truth.
他今天会来。He will come.
Ta1 Jin1 Tian1 Hui4 Lai2.
他今天可以来。<– 1) merely stating a claim of 'can sth'.
2) Allowing someone to do something.
Hence there are 2 meanings in this sentence. He can come. OR He is allowed to come.
Ta1 Jin1 Tian1 Ke3 Yi3 Lai2.
3) Paired with some adverb like Yi2 Ding4 to form a strong statement stating the truth.
他一定/肯定会来。He is sure to come.
Ta1 Yi2 Ding4 / Ken3 Ding4 Hui4 Lai2.
他一定/肯定可以来。1) He is certainly (allowed) to come. <– Ke3 Yi3 here hints approval.
2) He can surely come. <– this is sometimes known as the faith the speaker has for that person. Hence made this claim.
Ta1 Yi2 Ding4 / Ken3 Ding4 Ke3 Yi3 Lai2.
4) the ability and knowing something
我可以说法语。I can speak French. <– Capability after acquiring a skill

The usage depends on the speaker's mood. As both can be translated to be 'can' and most of the time they can be used interchageably. But I feel that ke yi would be stronger went seeking permission. Most of the time we use neng2 bu4 neng2 for softer requests.

English combines German grammar with French vocabulary. It's a simplistic view, but there's a lot of truth behind it too. That's why learning German or any of the Romance languages (French, Spanish, Italian) is comforting for English speakers.
The problem with Chinese is that it is just so so different from English. The same goes for Japanese. The writing alone is so detached from the spoken as to make it almost a language onto itself.
Although I find languages and literature interesting today, I hated it when I was in high school. I barely passed French and I hated English. It's not that I didn't do well in English, but my technically minded personality found all that fluffy language stuff to be quite non-utilitarian, hence useless. English also dragged down my grade average.
However, I've had an epiphany of sorts when I was in grad school. I rediscovered English! And the catalyst for this rediscovery is the 1995/6 TV mini-series Pride and Prejudice. I just found all that Victorian English to be quite delightful. Certainly more delightful than the latest paper from the Journal of Solid-State Circuits.
