The University of Redlands is pleased to announce the third cohort of faculty LENS (LEarNing Spatially) Fellows. Led by Dr. Diana Sinton, director of Spatial Curriculum and Research, LENS is a campus-wide initiative that promotes spatial literacy as a foundational component in curriculum, programs, and research. In the coming year, the LENS Fellows will work on curricular ideas around the theme of Mapping Communities.

You do not need to go to France or Quebec to learn how to speak French.By using repetition you can utilize one of the most important techniques to learning French. French has a melody that makes it fun to learn and the smooth tone is what really makes it the language of love. French is the third most spoken language in the world which makes learning the language very useful in any type of global business.

In order to learn French you will need to have the following: French dictionaries, French phrase books, French texts, index cards or sticky notes; internet, language CD’s and downloads, pen and paper along with any reading material and software.

To keep yourself organized you can label things use index cards, or sticky notes. Label everything at home with French words. This will reinforce you to learn despite having a strange looking house.

When it comes to learning French grammar, try to do this in an entertaining way. You can accomplish this by using flash cards that contain different verb tenses and endings, along with other parts of speech. Remember that adjectives must agree with the gender of the noun that it modifies.

Another way to learn French would be to forego English. Try to always communicate and schedule French speaking periods everyday. Purchasing language tapes and listening to it will allow you to understand French words and teach you the proper pronunciation. Apart from listening, try writing it down and practice talking back to the tapes on a daily basis for maximum results. You may also opt to visit the library which should have a good selection of French tapes. Make it a point to listen to French radio and music. In addition, try to watch French TV shows and movies.

This should help you learn and enjoy the language even more.

You should also try to mix in some reading and writing skills. Note that practice will always be a great way to develop one’s skills in learning French. To learn and speak French quickly and properly, you have to allot some time to read passages and then answer questions about them. Most of these language texts can come from French newspapers, magazines and literature. You can also use technology to your advantage by going to websites where you can click a button and the contents automatically translate to another language. Obviously, you will need to choose French.

Surrounding yourself with French speaking individuals will enhance your vocabulary skills in French and improve your comprehension ability. One of the most convenient methods to learn French is to use the internet. Tools such as microphones, VOIP and webcams allow you to do some online French chatting as well as some video conferencing. This is an excellent way to talk to your foreign friends and some native French speakers globally. By interacting with them in French you quickly learn language and at the same time learn some slang that you would not pick up normally.

If you love to surf the net, chances are you’re aware of numerous online French sources and websites. You can bookmark a French dictionary in your browser and be alerted to forums and other groups that have anything to do with French. Another great way to learn and speak French would be to purchase some French software program online or have some French DVDs help you out. This is a great way to learn how to speak French without compromising too much of your time. In addition, you may copy this in your MP3 player or iPod for mobility purposes. So with all the numerous ways and means to learn and speak French, you simply need to know which method works best for you. Only you can decide as to what techniques will allow you to learn French faster and quicker. Remember to choose the approach that will help you experience growth on a daily basis when learning the language.
