In China, young people get around censorship filters with euphemisms, and especially rhyming-euphemisms.

The party is in a mess & leaders are affected by foot-in-mouth (or may we call Digvijay syndrome). God only save this country!

HERSZENHORN and JEFF ZELENYPublished: November 3, 2010Fresh off their sweeping victories in the midterm elections, Congressional Republican leaders on Wednesday said that they would use their new majority in the House and bolstered ranks in the Senate to pursue a vision of smaller government and lower spending, as well as the continuation of the Bush-era tax cuts, which are due to expire at the end of the year.

Are there no non-whites in the tea party? Last I saw, they are pretty diverse. YOU single out the black population by asking “what if the party was black?”, in order to MAKE this about racism. YOU are turning this into a race issue. The proper question you SHOULD have asked is “what if the party was DEMOCRAT or LIBERAL?”. Or socialist/communist/etc. Anything that would draw a proper parallel to what the tea party is (a political party). Instead you use racism to incite more hate.

Pretty much.

One interpretation I've seen of this passage is that the words that are translated as "as a burnt offering" could also mean "like a burnt offering" or "in the spirit of a burnt offering" to reserve her for Yahweh's service. A vestal virgin, in effect. Which, as you've noted, doesn't fit at all with either Jephthah's grief, or the traditional commemoration.

Also, Judaism has never had anything resembling that kind of thing – particularly not for women. The most religiously ascetic lifestyles, those of priests, specifically excluded women. And did not forbid marriage. In fact, having a family was considered part of the job.

The only other type of religious asceticism recognized in Judaism during Biblical times was that of the (various kinds of) Nazirites. Such a life was open to women, but but did not require eternal virginity.

Besides which, both of these roles had specific traditions associated with initiation. None of them were ever analogized to burnt offerings.

It should also be noted that the scholars who parse this passage to refer to something other than human sacrifice tend to all be Christian apologists. Rabbinic scholars – who are a much more reliable source for the meanings of Hebrew language and traditions – generally all recognize that the story means just exactly what it looks like it means – that God's appointed Judge killed his daughter to fulfill a binding vow.

Republic of China is Taiwan now. You spent yourselves against Japan while the communists hid in cowardice. That's why you're stuck in Taiwan.

See, the problem with communism and fascism is that political stance is sort of like a circle– there's a lot of overlap between the two extremes. A lot of communist regimes believed in restriction of speech, like in Communist China during Mao's reign. Like you said, Hitler also had begun to do things like control businesses and the economy. Sometimes there is quite a lot of overlap.

And I agree- this thread is heavily Godwin'd.
